GP Rating

Build a Maritime Career with Comprehensive Training in Shipboard Operations, Safety, and Maintenance.

    General Purpose (GP) Rating

The General Purpose (GP) Rating is a 6-month certificate-level course that provides foundational training for candidates aspiring to work as ratings on Merchant Navy ships. This course combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for duties related to deck, engine, and safety operations onboard vessels. Key subjects include ship maintenance, safety drills, cargo handling basics, seamanship, firefighting, and personal survival techniques to ensure candidates are well-prepared for life at sea.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are required to undergo 36 months of mandatory onboard sea service as part of their practical training. After completing the sea service and medical fitness certification, candidates become eligible to join merchant ships as GP Ratings, assisting officers in various operational and safety roles. The GP Rating program offers an excellent entry point for those seeking a hands-on, dynamic career at sea and opportunities for progression through further training and experience.
