GP Rating

General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) is a DG Shipping–approved pre-sea training course designed for students who wish to start their career in the Merchant Navy as a rating. This course prepares candidates to work in both the Deck Department and Engine Department, making it a versatile entry-level maritime program.

The GP Rating course combines classroom learning, practical shipboard skills, and physical training to develop competence in seamanship, cargo operations, ship maintenance, engine room assistance, safety procedures, and watchkeeping duties. After successful completion of the course, candidates join merchant ships as Deck Rating or Engine Rating, where they gain sea experience and hands-on training.

GP Rating is an excellent option for students seeking a quick entry into the Merchant Navy, offering early earning opportunities, global exposure, and a clear pathway for career advancement at sea.

Why Opt for a GP Rating Course?

GP Rating is one of the most practical and accessible routes to join the Merchant Navy, especially for students who wish to start sailing early without pursuing long academic programs. It offers hands-on maritime training focused on real shipboard operations, making candidates job-ready in a short time.

One of the major advantages of the GP Rating course is its dual exposure to both deck and engine departments, allowing candidates to understand ship operations. The course also provides steady income opportunities, tax benefits, international travel, and long-term career growth within the shipping industry.

For students who prefer practical work, discipline, teamwork, and life at sea, GP Rating offers a strong foundation and the opportunity to rise through the ranks with experience and further certifications.
